Berta Opens

BertaWe’re a little late to the party on this one. This newcomer to the foodie scene has only been open for 2 weeks and already the town is buzzing with rave reviews.

Meet Berta, the latest venture from chef Andrew Cibej of Vini fame.

Located off the beaten-path in Alberta Street, you might have a little trouble finding this gem the first time, but you won’t be disappointed you made the effort.

You’ll be greeted by the warm glow of candlelight, friendly staff, a semi-industrial fit-out with concrete walls and copper piping and a chalkboard menu of generous italian-style dishes designed to share. It’s a little slice of Manhattan (or should that be Brooklyn?) buzzing on the edge of Surry Hills and clearly the foodie hotspot right now.

Try the prawns capers chilli, suburb suckling pig, cuttlefish zucchini or oxtail tortellini broth and and if you can’t decide, do like the table next to us and order one of everything. Match your meal with $5/ 75ml wine tastings or just go the whole bottle.

Oh and a little tip for the uninitiated: call the restaurant after 6pm to add your name to the seating list. They don’t take traditional bookings, but this little trick will help you bypass the masses who just show up on the night.

Berta – 17-19 Alberta Lane, Surry Hills
