God Save The Queen

Isaac Julien

Whether you’re a monarchist or an anarchist, you love a public holiday. Wish Betty a Happy Birthday and join in the fun. It promises to be a big weekend, fit for a Queen.

Get Frocked: The Observatory Hotel’s Night of Luxury is on tonight at The Powerhouse Museum. They’ve teamed up with Nicola Finetti to bring you a night of behind-the-scenes fashion and fun. Start the weekend early.  Tickets still available. Phone 8248 5282 or email spaevents@observatoryhotel.com.au. For more information, click here.

Ten Thousand Waves: See the world premiere of large scale photographs and lightboxes by acclaimed British film maker and artist, Isaac Julien, drawn from his 9 screen video work currently showing on Cockatoo Island as part of the Biennale.  The exhibition runs from 10 June – 10 July, 2010 at the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery. 8 Soudan Lane, Paddington. www.isaacjulien.com.

Brave The Elements: Make the most of the Harbour and its pretty lights this weekend by checking out the Fire, Water Festival in The Rocks. They promise fire sculptures, braziers, themed market stalls, musicians and Indian Kathak dancers. Top it up with a viewing of the illuminated Opera House Sails and Macquarie Visions light displays. It’s Sydney on steroids. How many festivals can we have going on at once? www.therocks.com.

It’s Party Time: Head to Luna Park this Saturday & Sunday for the “Come Together” festival. Rock out to Gyroscope, Grinspoon, Kisschasy, The Butterfly Effect and a whole heap of other cool sounding bands we don’t recognise. Plus there’s a DJ stage and unlimited free rides. The Big Top, 12-13 June, 2010. Tickets available for purchase here for $85.60. 18+ only. www.cometogether.com.au.

You’re So Vain: Looking for a forties frock, one-off hat, art deco furniture and other vintage treasures? Visit Becky Sharp’s Vanity Fair Vintage Market this Saturday, 12 June, 2010 from 10am-4pm. Leichhardt Town Hall, Norton St Leichhardt. $4.00 entry. www.vanityfairmarkets.com.

Bend it like Beckham: Football fever is unavoidable and best shared with others rather than lounging on the couch in your undies. Head down to Cockle Bay to watch all the action on the 9.6 x 6m floating screens. Australia plays Germany this Monday at 4:30am. To get in the mood, stop in at the Cargo bar “Goal” live site  for a few brewskies beforehand. www.sydneyfifafanfest.com.au.

Oui, oui: Pop into the Moncur Terrace on Tuesdays and enjoy a French film, Kronenbourg and aperitif for $9.50.  The next film is Anthony Zimmer on 15 June, 2010. See the full schedule here. 116 Queen St, Woollahra. From 6pm onwards. www.afsydney.com.au.

Sew Interesting: Think you’re the next Marc Jacobs or Diane von Furstenburg? Got what it takes to “cut it” in the fashion industry…or at the very least, curious to find out? Head to “A Higher Learning Fashion Event” at the Ivy for 2 days of workshops led by leaders of the Australian fashion industry. June 17 & 18, 2010. The Ivy Sunroom. www.ahigherlearning.com.au.
