Sydney Roller Derby’s Next Bout
Dirk: Aren’t you gonna take your skates off?
Rollergirl: I never take my skates off.
(Boogie Nights)
“Jam”, “Pivot”, “Bout”, “Pack” and “Fresh Meat” are all part of the lingo, as is girl-on-girl action, hard-hitting knocks, quad-wheel skates and fishnets.
Welcome to the rowdy world of roller derby.
It’s a sport that’s been around in the U.S since the 1930’s but has been experiencing a revival worldwide since 2001. The Sydney Roller Derby League had its first competitive season last year and is now in full swing with a sassy and scary line-up of competitors with names like “Bitchy ‘n’ Scratchy”, “Miss Biff” and “Trippy Longstockings”.
Brace yourself as the toughest ladies in town lace up their skates and go head to head on Saturday, 26 June, 2010. In this mid season clash the Screaming Assault Sirens will do battle with skate and booty versus The D’viants.
Or check out one of the home Interleague Bouts scheduled for 4 September, 9 October and 20 November. Bouts are consistently sold out, so get in quick.
Why? Because it’s wheelie good.
Saturday, 26 June 2010 – The Hordern Pavilion
Doors Open 5:30pm. Bouts commence at 7pm.
$18.90 for “suicide” track-side seating. You can purchase tickets here.
