Sydney Design 2010
It feels like more of an event for trendy Melbournites than Sydneysiders but clearly we’ve matured enough to handle a design festival. Victoria, eat your heart out.
Sydney Design is underway and with 70 or so events between now and 15 August, 2010 – it’s virtually impossible to know where to focus your energies.
Here’s our cherry picks of the highlights:
Iron Designer (6 August) – like an “Iron Chef” for fashion, where designers take to the stage with key ingredient, their creative materials, and 20 minutes to translate a design concept into something tangible.
Creating the look: Benini and Fashion Photography – Bruno Benini is recognised as one of Australia’s leading 20th century fashion photographers and together with wife Hazel, fashion stylist, they produced some of Australia’s most memorable and elegant images. Check out this exhibition at the Powerhouse through 18 April, 2011.
International Speaker: Giovanna Castiglioni (12 August) – Achille Castiglioni was a leading light among industrial designers of the 20th century, producing iconic furniture, lighting pieces and modernist accessories such as the Mezzadro chair and Arco lamp. Come hear his daughter Giovanna share insights about his life and work.
Young Blood: designers market (13 August) – featuring fashion, furniture, jewellery, graphics, industrial design and more, you’ll be able to buy direct from the best new design talent in the business.
Specific Merchandise x Third Drawer Down (until 13 August) – Melbourne design store favourite, Third Drawer Down, has teamed up with the Museum of Art Souvenirs Store to set up shop in Surry Hills. Skip the exhibitions and head straight to the gift store. It’s a design emporium like no other.
