Sticky Bar Launches Sticky Roast Special

Sticky Bar

Recall the days before Sydney’s explosion of wine, champagne, absinthe, cocktail and beer bars? Those dark days that seemed to go on forever before first light appeared on the horizon in the form of Sticky Bar?

Remember those nights standing on Crown Street, quizzically looking from street to map (on paper of course) to street for confirmation that yes, non-descript, slightly menacing Taggart’s Lane was indeed the right place? The ritual of shuffling in front of the unmarked back-alley entrance after texting a mobile number posted to the door, and hesitatingly waiting to be let in.

The story behind Sticky and its older sibling, Tablefor20, is now infamous. Four years ago, owner Michael Fantuz started Tablefor20 as a kind of neighbourhood supper club. It had soon outgrown Michael’s living room, so a deal was struck with local charity, Hope St Urban Compassion – Tablefor20 would give 10% of turnover to the charity in exchange for use of 182 Campbell St, Surry Hills.

In 2008, Sticky Bar, upstairs from Tablefor20, was born. A hole in the wall (or attic, in this case) perfect for ‘effette’ conversation, book-reading and chardonnay-drinking, as the former NSW President of the Australian Hotels Association once famously said Sydney didn’t want or need.

It might have been awhile since you’ve visited Sticky; it might be your local. But be assured all the good stuff is still there – the interesting, well-priced wine list, kick-ass cocktails, warm and relaxed service, live music, cozy lighting and cool but unpretentious crowd nestled on the mishmash of eclectic, op-shop furniture.

Now that winter is upon us, Sticky have reintroduced the Wednesday Night Sticky Roast special, the day’s roast and a glass of wine for $15. Given the quality of fare on offer (like free-range chicken stuffed with sun-dried tomato and served with lashings of red capsicum, white onion and herbs on crispy Italian-style potatoes), you’ll be lamenting its not hump day every day.

If you’re tossing up whether to try the tasting plate of single-origin Tuscan chocolate matched with Sticky at 20 bucks per person, just think of it as a gold coin donation to Hope St. It’ll be the best chocolate-for-charity purchase you ever make.

Sticky Bar – Level 2, 182 Campbell Street, Surry Hills

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I enjoy seeing websites that understand the value of providing a prime resource for free. I truly loved reading your post. Thanks!
