In Vino Veritas

The Wine Library Opens

Wine LibraryFruity top-notes and earthy undertones, hints of passionfruit and aftertastes of mint – nothing inspires such colourful descriptions as wine does.

You might not know if it’s a shiraz or a merlot and you definitely can’t taste the elderflower (what is that sommelier talking about?!), but there’s no denying that a good glass of wine is one life’s luxuries.

The folks behind Sydney favourite Buzo are well aware of this fact, and their latest venture is something that even Bacchus would be proud of.

Woollahra is the lucky home of The Wine Library, where the dizzying wine list boasts over 350 varieties from Bordeaux to Bolgheri. For those of us who need some help (and most of us do), the knowledgeable staff will explain exactly why you’ll like the “Kummer Shuster” over the “Delas Côtes du Ventoux.”

The 14 page list soars to wines costing over $3000, but the selection of $6-$10 glasses is as pleasing as the staff who serve it. While the usual spirits are on offer, the Skinky Sangria is perfect if you’re channelling Barcelona – Olé!

This place may be all about the wine, but the food shares the stage. Breakfast and lunch mean quality panini and toasts, while the heavier fare starts from about 5pm.

Boards of cured artisanal meats, marinated olives, and sweet potato crisps are ideal for starting your meal before you move on to the pork and veal meatballs, shaved fennel, parmesan and mint salad, or the hearty macaroni and cheese bake (mmm truffle…).

The sleek zinc bar, bespoke tiling, and chameleon lights in the courtyard create an inviting and intimate atmosphere. It’s a relaxed and unpretentious setting to quaff a few glasses and get a decent feed.

The Wine Library won’t turn H2O in to vino – but they come pretty close.

This bar is a little gem – great atmosphere and delicious tapas. Good suggestion regarding the macaroni. Scrumptious!
