Love Grub – A Seriously Cute Cafe
What qualifies a cafe as seriously cute? How about a menu fluent in Mod Oz and Japanese, a community vegetable garden, a patch of grass smattered with kids’ play-things, bold but whimsical wall art, and a jumble of furniture bursting onto the street. Love Grub has all of these things and more, and indeed qualifies as A Seriously Cute Cafe.
But this little cafe is leading a double life — by moonlighting as a “Japas” bar come sundown. As the description suggests, it’s Japanese served up tapas style. Strange, right? But really it makes sense, with Japanese cuisine’s colourful, elaborate dishes and its penchant for a variety of small servings in one sitting.
Here you’ll find croquettes with tonkatsu sauce, riceballs with blue cheese and garlic towers sitting alongside your more traditional sashimi and tempura. Think of it as having the variety of a sushi train without the constant indecision that comes with every plate sliding past.
Love Grub delights in contrast and quirks — from its surprising location in a residential sprawl; its ability to slide from sunny cafe to a groovy dimly-lit bar; its bacon-and-egg hand rolls for breakfast; and its selection of beer, wine and sake.
It’s these haphazard details which add up to a whole lot of natural charm welcoming any and all.
