Sukjai Thai
Move over Chinatown. It’s all about Thainatown now in the Haymarket ‘hood. Although the precinct’s almost Pad Thai-ed out, there’s still space for Sukjai to take flight.
The newly-opened restaurant’s aeroplane wallpaper by nokhookdesign transports you to a unique dining experience. You may even feel a little high off your Thai thanks to the design’s kooky, cartoon-ish character. Think of it as a transient trip to Thailand; spiced up…
The quirky theme continues with the restaurant’s décor, where’s it’s all about bright colours that pop. Highlighter hues beam through the chandelier and lights made from glass mugs that swing from the ceiling. Plus, ride the rainbow on the mismatched chairs with candy-striped cushions. Take a time-machine to childhood through the fun, but offbeat ornaments on the bookshelf and whimsical wall-hangings. Thankfully, the gaudiness of the generous-sized space is offset with dark-wood floors and tables; spacious enough for a spread of dishes.
There’s no beating around the (chilli) bush; this is real-deal Thai cuisine. Safety cards should be provided in seat pockets for those who can’t handle the heat. Diners can try classics such as Pad Thai (traditionally served with a pile of chilli) and staple stir fries. Or, experience the turbulence of trying to translate the menu’s more unusual dishes. Sukjai’s closest attempt at Western fare is their version of ‘spaghetti’. But beware; this isn’t like the bolognaise Mama makes. Instead, the tumbly strands are speckled with- yes, you guessed it, loads of fresh chilli. Water anyone?
Although, after a few Sukjai journeys, you’ll probably get hooked on the heat. No need to stow your tray table. Just come back to claim your Frequent Thai-er points.
