Four Ate Five
The saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ usually receives an eye-rolling response. But it’s all truth when it comes to Four Ate Five, Surry Hills’ new hangout.
Why is this so? There are no fancy fit-outs here; not needed when the food is the shining star. The café has a casual vibe with communal tables and mags for perusal, but it’s the fare which gets five out of five.
Come for the coffee (from smooth-operators Single Origin), brekkie, brunch or lunch. Using top produce and offering many organic options, choose from delights like French toast stuffed with bananas, muesli, egg dishes and the daily-changing vegan breakfast. Or, for a more exotic start to the day, make for the Moroccan Baked Eggs; a pot zinging with flavour. It’s the small surprises which are gleeful, like finding little almonds studded in the egg mix; providing the perfect crunch. All washed down with refreshing juices such as apple, pineapple and mint.
Late-risers or lunchers can sample the more savoury pickings. The pulled pork sandwich with cucumber, apple, tomato chutney and aioli is definitely something to oink about. Also on the menu is a beef burger with authentic hand-cut chips, assorted pies such as pumpkin and eggplant, fresh salads and snacks like zucchini fries with aioli.
Whatever you’re here for, get in early. On a Sunday morning, queues snake around this spot like a lineup for a Lady GaGa gig. Except, the star of this show just might be the Moroccan Baked Eggs…
Four Ate Five – Open daily at 7am.
