Don’t Cry for Us, Argentina

Porteño opens in Surry Hills
Even if you aren’t a member of the Facebook group “I miss Buenos Aires more than fat kids miss empanadas”, you should be excited about the recent opening of Porteño, the hot new Cleveland Street restaurant and bar from the Bodega crew.
Within moments of being ushered inside you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the set of Evita.
Grab a glass of New World vino tinto and perch yourself on a dark bentwood or leather seat at the bar upstairs to take in all the moody lighting, art-nouveau antiques and cow-hide flourishes in this stark white “Spanish mission” style building.
Slick, black-clad waiters slide past with armfuls of the Argentine classic, asado, succulent meat cuts that have been grilled over a fruitwood fire in the open kitchen, accompanied by piquant chimichurri sauce to match and, yes, crispy, moreish empanadas.
For dessert, sweet tooths won’t want to miss Porteño’s twist on Aussie classics like the mango pavlova with lashings of dulce de leche and peanuts.
With the opening of Boteco a few months ago, and now Porteño, Cleveland Street’s transformation into “Little South America” is almost complete. Save yourself the airfare, dig out those hot rollers and experience it for yourself.
¡Salud!
