Moose General Store
If the striking, checkered tiles on the wall or the quirky furniture spread out eagerly on the pavement don’t catch your eye, then maybe you’ve seen it all before… but we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with this re-introduction to the foodie scene, Moose General Store.
Set on an inconspicuous spot in Redfern Moose was, until early this year, a humble but oh-so-great cafe just finding its legs. Oh, it still is a cafe — but now prefers the title of General Store to signal itself as a go-to for an assortment of gourmet and organic goods.
The menu is concise, and in an eccentric touch it’s presented to you between the pages of old children’s books. But don’t let this whimsy decieve you, every item on offer has a phenomenal amount of love and labour behind it (the pork in their Southern Pulled Pork Roll is roasted for about 9 hours).
Breakfast favourites are twisted and turned on their head with tempting results, like Baked Eggs in Sugo or Chai-Loaf with Sour Cherry. Moose stocks some inventive home-made jams (of which Fig and Rum is held in very high regard), reusable HookTurn coffee cups and a range of granolas. Just saying the words ‘Belgian Chocolate Granola’ out loud manages to taste good.
You’ll feel quite at home with the cosy blankets on offer (more Earth-friendly than heaters) and Golden Cobra coffee delivered with a perfect crema. It’s clear that the crowd here are regulars drawn by the great food, service and atmosphere. So much so, that by the end of the weekend rush they’ll sometimes run out of food… A definite incentive to get there early.
And what’s with the name? Apparently each of the owners just “had a thing for moose”, even before they’d met.
If you’re not into hunting it’s still worth tracking down Moose and giving it a good shot. Or two, or three…
