A Little Slice of South America

Boteco
Another one joins the small bar revolution. Set to change the Cleveland St scene, Boteco, is Surry Hills’ latest trendy new bar, but it’s one with a difference. As authentic as they come, Boteco is inspired by the popular small bars of Brazil.
Traditionally, a “boteco” means a meeting place where locals could find food, drinks and a good old chin-wag shared in the company of friends. This definitely carries through in the casual and intimate atmosphere of Boteco, where you’ll find friendly staff, a chilled South American vibe and Brazilian samba music emanating from the speakers. South America here we come!
The food is called “Petiscos”, not to be confused with tapas. It is traditional Brazilian bar food and is all about the share plate, so be sure to order a few. Pesticos means “tasty food” in Portugese, and that it is. Try the ceviche of snapper with red onion, fresh chilli, tomato, coriander and tapioca ‘caviar’ or the Bolinho de Bacalhau (salted cod balls), mmm.
If you’re feeling less adventurous, try the Cordeiro Assado Lamb cutlets with black eyed beans or the Picanha Maturada grilled Brazilian beef cut with salsa and cassava chips. Next up for the cheeky sweet tooth-ers, don’t go past the Brazilian chocolate and coconut truffles. Yes please!
And more importantly, (depending on you order of preference)…is the cocktail list. Boteco has pages and pages of delicious South American cocktails with lists dedicated to each national drink.
From Brazilian Caipirinhas and Batidas (a Brazilian drink made with coconut milk or fresh fruit juices and cachaca) to Peruvian and Chilean Pisco (made from fermented grape liquor), Mexican tequila and Carribbean rum there is something for everyone.
If you’re looking for a little exotica in your cocktail, then you have come to the right place! With additions like orange blossom, cinnamon and nutmeg, mixed with Boteco’s own home brewed ginger beer, you’re bound to find your sugar and spice delight.
The wine list is “all things authentic” with boutique wines hand picked from Brazilian, Chilean and Argentinian vineyards. If you feel like a warming glass of red this Winter, then the Carmenere is a must. Originating from Europe, this wine was thought to have completely disappeared until it was found again in Chile. Obrigado Boteco!
Alright, desce mais uma rodada (one more round!)
Boteco is located at 421 Cleveland St, opposite Bourke St Surry Hills.

Thanks for this review – I went there last night with friends and it was great! The food is really tasty, they let us taste a few wines before we bought a bottle and when we didn’t like the cocktail, they gave us a different one for free. Definitely recommended
